Voice Over IP (VoIP)

An increasingly common phrase, but what does VoIP actually mean?
Internet Protocol (IP) is a way of wrapping information so that it can be delivered of across virtually any communications infrastructure. IP has rapidly become the industry standard protocol for carrying data but, using emerging technology, is now being used to carry voice and video. In a well designed network voice calls can now be reliably carried alongside data. The very nature of IP allows it dynamically recover from a failed circuit to re-route over any available alternative path.

In its simplest terms, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is about making calls over an IP network. In the consumer market this is usually the Internet, in the business market this is usually a privately managed Wide Area Network (WAN). The objective is to provide a substantial reduction in cost with acceptable call quality. VoIP can work alongside existing handsets (with an appropriate adaptor), direct to IP phones, or soft phones on a PC or even a mobile phone, wherever you have a reliable IP connection.

Call charges are significantly reduced because costly dedicated circuits no longer form part of the cost equation for delivering the call to the providers switching equipment. For the same reason, calls to other VoIP phones can be free, as lonmg as there is a common IP network over which the call can be carried. VoIP can be used anywhere there is a broadband connection, so employees can make free calls at home, on the train or even the beach, using wireless access technology. VoIP is the medium of the future for voice calls and with SIPcom, the business applications available means that the sales opportunities are endless.

VoIP has had a difficult press in recent years because of the adoption of lower grade solutions by home users and enthusiasts seeking simple cost savings on basic calls made overseas, but technology is improving and many high street retailers and consumer web sites now offer acceptable VoIP solutions for home use.
Many businesses are already using “VoIP” without realizing it, as an increasing proportion of call traffic on national and international trunk networks now uses IP as the underlying protocol.

The VOIP service provided by SIPcom is far superior to that offered by the lower grade consumer services. The use of uncontended bandwidth, industry leading Cisco routing and switching equipment coupled with our carrier grade class 5 softswitch platform enables SIPcom to a consistently high quality, high availability enterprise call service, backup up by strong SLAs.
